Addiction Symptoms

Whether abuse relates to drugs or alcohol, misuse is likely to lead to health problems - these can include social problems, injuries, violence, morality, and physical or psychological dependence, to name a few.

There is also a disturbingly high rate of suicide amongst alcohol and drug abusers. Social isolation along with the physiological distortion of brain chemistry caused by long term abuse and drugs are believed to contribute to the increased risk of suicide. Another factor is the acute intoxicating effects of the drugs may make suicide more likely to occur.

Drug abuse, including alcohol and prescription drugs can induce symptoms which resemble mental illness. This can occur both during the intoxicated state and also during the withdrawal stage. In some cases the substance-induced psychiatric disorders can persist long after detoxification, for example prolonged psychosis and / or depression after amphetamine or cocaine abuse.

Some of the signs to look out for in drug abuse are reddened sclera's (whites of eyes), tiredness, excessive hunger, lack of motivation, excessive happiness, paranoia, confusion or irritability. Also, abuse of depressants can cause lowered inhibitions, poor co-ordination, slowed heart rate or low blood pressure.
