Substance Abuse Treatment
Substance Abuse Treatment is a behaviour modification therapy for those who use drugs or alcohol to the detriment of themselves and others.
Substance Abuse can be characterised as the overindulgence in and reliance upon addictive substances, especially Drugs and Alcohol and any use of illegal Drugs is usually considered substance abuse.
It is not uncommon for substance abuse to begin with one type of drug such as Marijuana or Alcohol, and then progressing to more serious Drugs, such as Cocaine, Heroin or Alcoholism.
Those who are abusing substances can experience cravings that are as important to them as the need for food or water to a non abuser. Despite serious family, health or financial problems an addict will generally continue to use. The user experiences an increase in tolerance, the need for greater amounts of the substance in order to achieve intoxication or desired effect or markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount.
One of the key aims within treatment is to educate the substance abuser about addiction. Another is to edify the individual about all of the changes needed to live a drug-free lifestyle. Our treatment centre prioritises in making the client aware of their drug using behaviour and the effect it has on not only their lives, but also on the people around them.
Most addicts are in some form of denial, we aim to make the individual aware of the consequences of their addiction, for example getting the client to see any loss or corollary their abuse has had on their lives.
The Thames Clinic would perform an extensive evaluation and assessment to help determine as much about the personality of the client as well as any mental problems that might exist. With an ultimate objective of helping the addict see the changes they will need to make in their lives in order to be successful in abstaining from drugs.
