Heroin is an opioid and this makes it one of the most difficult addictions to overcome. It affects the nervous system which becomes adapted to accommodating unceasing exposure to the drug.
To recover from heroin addiction it is paramount to go through the process of detox, this unfortunately has many withdrawal symptoms which can begin within 12 hours of not using and peak after two to four days. These withdrawal symptoms include, but are not limited to: Nausea, anxiety, sweating, chills, insomnia, anxiety and abdominal pain.
At the Thames Clinic we offer a supervised detox; this means that the detox process will be completed with the help of our fully trained medical staff. They will be on hand to assist with any aspect of the detox process, and able to administer any medication needed to help the process complete as smoothly as possible.
There are certain medications that can be administered to help ease the pain. One of there is Methadone which is a synthetic opiate medication that binds to the same receptors as heroin. However, it is taken orally so the achievement is gradual and the effects are sustained. This allows the medication to reduce the desire for other opioid drugs while preventing withdrawal symptoms.
