Benzodiazepines are part of a type of medication commonly called tranquillizers. These medications are extremely physically and psychologically addictive. When the individual is using benzodiazepines on a long term basis it builds a great reliance and also reduces the general health of the person.
Discontinuing the use of benzodiazepines without medical supervision can be extremely uncomfortable and categorically dangerous if not properly managed. At the Thames Clinic we have a team qualified medical staff to ensure the detox is safe and that the process is as comfortable for the user as possible. Because of the severity of the withdrawal symptoms, detoxification from benzodiazepines should be gradual by way of a medically managed reduction.
Withdrawal from benzodiazepines varies according to how much the person has been using. Symptoms may range from insomnia, agitation, depression, nightmares, panic attacks, nausea, sweating, headaches, blurred vision and palpitations. Going “cold turkey” off of these drugs could cause severe symptoms, including seizures and convulsions. The most upsetting and disturbing aspect of withdrawal reported by users withdrawing from this drug that they feel that they are “losing their minds”.
While every client’s experience is different, all clients will receive individually prepared care and personalised treatment plans and offered group and individual therapy that is based on the 12 steps to help them with their continued recovery.
