The first step to help repair the damaging effects of Alcohol Abuse is Detoxification or Detox for short. This is basically the process of getting rid of toxic substances in the body.
Alcohol Detoxification can also refer to the period of withdrawal during which a person's body returns to homeostasis, a stable condition, after long-term use of an addictive substance. The liver and kidneys normally carry out Detoxification in the body. However within most alcoholics, alternative detoxification processes become necessary.
Alcohol Detox is acheived by abstinence from Alcohol, medication with the most common drugs used for Alcohol Detoxification being Benzodiazepines, and also altering the diet of the individual, the diet is recommended to be protein rich, with lots of fibre and fluids. Alcohol Detox is very difficult without support from friends and family and a commitment on the part of the patient.
After Alcohol Detoxification, other treatments must be undergone to deal with the underlying addiction that caused the Alcohol use.
